So much under my skin at the moment. The biggest thing is that my project position is extended but my permanent boss wants me back so I don't get to see things through to the end. Plus I have to go back to a job I abhor. Well it is some of the petulant people and the horrific workload that I really can't stomach. Ah well, everything happens for a reason.
The wedding in Mackay (St Helen's Beach) was lovely! I didn't take my camera for some strange reason only known to myself on that very day. Scored some more wedding stubby holders though - getting quite a collection now!
Then off to Brampton Island. I still didn't take any pics there except on the underwater camera, which aren't worth copying and putting on here.
So if you've ever wondered about Brampton there here is the scoop. It has NO NIGHTLIFE. Cocktail hour is from 5 - 6 - embrace it!. You have to book for dinner but if naughty can simply turn up when you are hungry and still eat. Food options are very limited - give the restaurant the swerve for lunch and dinner - even if you have to eat instant noodles! The water is very salty and I found diving a little hard! There is a jetty to swim with the big fish from, and the fish bowl, just off the resort is fantastic for snorkelling to your hearts content. They give you beach towels (yay!). They may or may not clean your room before cocktail hour (what the?) and they may or may not clean down benches and empty bins when they do. Hmmm. Mosquitoes - never seen so many outside a room in my entire life! We spent happy moments bashing them to death with pillows. The pools are very nice but there are people who will go down and bags the good spots before breakfast! Very Kath and Kim! We also went during school holidays so a lot of stuff was already booked out. If you do nothing else though go snorkelling in the fish bowl and ride the jet skis. We got ours up to 80km (and no accidents!). Oh and you fly to and from the island in little planes, which I loved.
And I am having man problems. Well only one man is a problem - the others are sitting off to the side just messing with my head from time to time. How many of you out there are still knocking back the man you lost your virginity to several decades ago? Fond memories of the sex but the relationship was a nightmare. Then there is the man who is very nice but not necessarily right for me (if I'm already iffy then what does that say?). Then there is the one that is absolutely terrible for me that I am increasingly hung up on. The girls made me read "He's Just Not That Into You" which worked for about a day. ARGGGGHHHHHH! No idea what I'm going to do about that one except keep my distance.
It was Miss Beautiful's b'day last week. She also had a health prob requiring surgery. Always gives us a scare. So the night before surgery where were we? At The Tivoli bopping along to The Waifs! I've always wanted to see them but given the girls live in America now they don't tour over here much. And it was packed out too - at one point it was almost as noisy as being at the Robbie Williams concert. The singer who also plays harp has the most amazing voice. They certainly exceeded my expectations live.
As a surprise for Miss B we took her to see Ben Lee at The Tivoli last night. She didn't find out till dinner and the look on her face was magic! If you haven't seen Ben in the flesh then you are in for a shock. He is quite short (needs legs to match his body length), has scary fluff hair parted on the side (never a good look), big ears and was wearing a gold suit. Oh and his guitar looked like it was kid sized! But he can write a love song. And he can lift the roof with his singing. He was only supported by a guy on electric guitar, his acoustic, and another guy on grand piano and keyboard (for the tinkly tunes). And his new cd Ripe is excellent. The title song is actually my fave:
And for once
In my life
I saw what I wanted
And I took a bite
I picked the fruit
From the tree
And it was ripe
Very simple but effective lyrics. He's also very funny to listen to when he tells his little stage stories. I yelled out to him during the concert and he yelled back "Hello". Aw shucks.
Now onto one of my other faves - soccer lovin' Robbie Williams. He was recently filmed talking about his current hobbies in LA. They included wanking, shooting heroin and bum sex. I so hope the American's get his sick sense of humour.
My other ongoing fave at the moment is Amy Winehouse. Poor Amy has been in a drug bust. Given the types of drugs she has injested it hardly seems right that she was only busted for marijuana. I love her songs and her singing but she is going the way of Janis and Keith and Jimi. If you find yourself liking just one song of hers then do yourself a favour and buy both her cd's. Her lyrics and melodies are amazing. Stronger Than Me is a must listen to song.
Speaking of cd's - I have discovered that if you buy a Japanese import of your favourite artist then you generally get extra songs for a similar price. So far I've done just that for Snow Patrol, Amy and The Kooks. Very happy with the goods.
And I mean that literally - my stomach is making a hell of a racket today - very embarrassing. I keep saying to my co-workers "I swear that was only my stomach!" Don't want them to think I have a noisy bottom!
Last night I actually went grocery shopping - $165 please! I honestly can't remember the last time I did a full shop. Normally I just go and get dog food when I've run out. It was kind of fun! I even bought 3 trashy mags to read - mmm, so whose had plastic surgery this week?
Day 2 of the detox is not too bad - I was expecting worse. I even had to get up very early today for a meeting (which means I also get to go home early!). I've faded considerably as the day has worn on but still had quite a productive day.
My day today started off a bit dodgy though. First the govt car I booked was so empty I wasn't sure it would get me to the servo, so I was late for my first meeting. Grrr. And someone has totally mashed the side of it! Probably same person who used all the petrol!
Then on my way from Wynnum to Redlands this guy came around a corner on totally the opposite side of the road. The way he was hugging the curb I got the feeling he was used to driving on the other side of the road. Anyway we got close enough to see the looks of terror on each others faces before he swerved (I had nowhere to go). Then when I got to Redlands I saw a car doing the stupidest thing. Well the driver rather than the car. This man had his car parked in one carpark and decided he would go backwards (one way lane) and park on the front lawn of the building next door. Why he couldn't walk there is beyond me! Anyway he reverses out of an 'in only' driveway, points his car in the opposite direction of the traffic and drives half on the grass to the building next door. What's worse is that he had one side of his car hanging off the kerb and scraping on the concrete the whole way there. Tool. In what world did that seem like a good idea?
Because I'm driving today I've been listening to The Waifs live and RW's Rudebox at top volume. If I had to pick only one type of music that I loved then it would have to be acoustic and harp together (a la The Waifs). Actually probably slide and harp and then just acoustic and harp. Those musicians who just jam together on those two instruments blow my mind! I must admit that I have been a little spoiled in that department though with my niece's husband and the musos he works with. Wish I had vid of him to add here actually. Last time I heard he was into the ukelele (spell?) Hawaiian style. Shit! I can't spell today!
Before I forget, I must comment a little on Rudebox. I know it hasn't been a hit everywhere because everyone might've been expecting more d & m kind of music from RW. I like it though. I think it comes across as shallow and non-sensical but if you listen to the lyrics the same self-depreciating humour is there and some of the lyrics are really clever. I just see it as him working through a different musical phase. Certainly he's not relying on great vocal skills for this one but it suits a certain type of mood anyway. Faves are probably Bongo Bong (what is the monkey obsession?) and Good Doctor. She's Madonna - crap, and there is another song (name escapes me) that sounds like he is channeling Jamiroquai (sorry, definately can't spell that!). As for The Waifs - Lighthouse is by far my favourite with London Still a close second. I'd love to see them live sometime but they don't seem to play in their homeland much.
I tend to hate songs that are named after someone. I think it is how they find words to rhyme with them. I've got one named after me - how about you?????
